How to Read Your Kundli: A Beginner's Guide

Learn the basics of Lagna (Ascendant), Rashi (Moon sign), houses, and how to start interpreting your Vedic birth chart.

A Kundli (कुंडली) — also called Janma Kundali, Janam Patrika, or simply “birth chart” — is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. Every planet has a precise position; every position carries meaning. Reading your Kundli is the foundation of Vedic astrology.

This guide walks you through the four elements you need to grasp before any deeper analysis makes sense.

1. The Lagna (Ascendant)

The Lagna is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It changes roughly every 2 hours, which is why birth time accuracy matters so much — even a 15-minute error can change your Lagna.

Why it’s important:

  • The Lagna sign defines your first house, which represents your physical body, personality, and how you appear to the world.
  • Every other house position is calculated relative to the Lagna.
  • Your Lagna lord (the planet ruling your Ascendant sign) becomes a key indicator of vitality and life direction.

2. The Rashi (Moon Sign)

The Rashi is the zodiac sign in which the Moon was placed at your birth. Unlike Western astrology — where “Sun sign” gets all the attention — Vedic astrology treats the Moon sign as the most personal indicator. It governs:

  • Mind, emotions, and inner life
  • How you relate to your mother and family
  • Your subconscious patterns

When someone asks “What’s your Rashi?”, they mean Moon sign. Most Indian newspapers print daily Rashifal organized by Rashi, not Sun sign.

3. The 12 Houses (Bhavas)

Your chart is divided into 12 houses, each governing a specific area of life:

HouseArea
1stSelf, body, personality
2ndFamily, wealth, speech
3rdSiblings, courage, short journeys
4thMother, home, emotional foundation
5thChildren, creativity, education
6thHealth, debts, enemies
7thMarriage, partnerships
8thLongevity, transformations, occult
9thFather, dharma, fortune, long travel
10thCareer, public reputation
11thGains, friends, elder siblings
12thLoss, expenses, moksha, foreign lands

A planet’s effects depend heavily on which house it sits in.

4. Planetary Strength and Dignity

Even before getting into yogas, doshas, or aspects, look at where each planet is:

  • Exalted (उच्च) — at its strongest, gives full positive results.
  • In its own sign (स्वग्रहे) — strong, generally favorable.
  • Friendly sign — comfortable, mildly positive.
  • Neutral sign — average results.
  • Enemy sign — uncomfortable, mixed results.
  • Debilitated (नीच) — weakest, results often delayed or distorted.

For example: Sun is exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra. Saturn is exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries. Knowing where each of your planets sits gives you the first major reading of your chart.

Where to go from here

Once you understand Lagna, Rashi, houses, and dignity, you’re ready for:

  1. Vimshottari Mahadasha — the 120-year cycle that tells you which planet is the “current ruler” of your life.
  2. Yogas — specific planetary combinations that produce strong effects (Raj Yoga for power, Dhana Yoga for wealth, Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas for greatness).
  3. Doshas — challenging combinations like Manglik, Kalsarpa, Sade Sati that need to be understood and remediated.
  4. Divisional Charts — the Navamsa (D9) for marriage, Dasamsa (D10) for career, etc.
