Kaal Sarp Dosha
काल सर्प दोष
A chart carries Kaal Sarp when all seven grahas fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, with none on the other. It is a pattern in the whole chart rather than a placement, which is why it either applies or does not.
It is also the most heavily monetised finding in Indian astrology. Almost everything written about it is written by somebody selling the removal, so this page states what the pattern is, what the sources actually say, and what we will not tell you.
The axis, and why it makes a pattern
Rahu and Ketu are not bodies. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, which is why eclipses happen there and why Jyotish calls them the shadow grahas. Being geometric opposites, they are always exactly 180° apart — so they cut the zodiac into two halves at every moment of every day.
Kaal Sarp is the case where every other graha has ended up in one of those halves. Nothing about any individual planet changes; what is read is the crowding — the chart having no counterweight on one side.
Two directions are distinguished. When the planets lie in the arc running from Rahu toward Ketu it is called ascending, and the reverse descending. Sources differ on how much that distinction is worth.
The twelve types
Named for serpents, but the logic underneath is plain: the type is set by which house Rahu occupies, and each is read against the affairs of that house. The names are labels for twelve positions, not twelve separate doctrines.
| Type | Rahu in | Read against |
|---|---|---|
| Anant | House 1 | self, body, how you are met |
| Kulik | House 2 | money held, family, speech |
| Vasuki | House 3 | courage, siblings, effort |
| Shankhpal | House 4 | home, mother, peace of mind |
| Padma | House 5 | children, learning, judgement |
| Mahapadma | House 6 | debt, illness, opposition |
| Takshak | House 7 | marriage, partnership |
| Karkotak | House 8 | upheaval, inheritance, the hidden |
| Shankhachur | House 9 | fortune, father, belief |
| Ghatak | House 10 | work, standing, action |
| Vishdhar | House 11 | gains, networks, elder siblings |
| Sheshnag | House 12 | loss, expense, withdrawal |
Because the type depends on Rahu's house, it depends on your Lagna — and so on your birth time. Two people born the same day with different birth times can carry different types of the same pattern. Why the Lagna decides the houses.
Partial Kaal Sarp, and where the disputes are
The pattern is all-or-nothing by definition, and real charts rarely oblige. The common case is one planet sitting just outside the axis while the other six are inside, and this is where sources part company — some read it as the full dosha, some as a weakened form, some as no dosha at all.
There is a second, quieter disagreement about planets sitting almost exactly on Rahu or Ketu. We treat a planet within 3° of either node as on the axis rather than breaking it, which is the more common convention, and one you should know we have chosen rather than discovered.
Our reading reports the pattern as present, partial or absent, names the type, and says which planet breaks it when one does. What that means is not something we will decide for you.
What the classical texts say about it
Nothing. Kaal Sarp is not in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, not in Phaladeepika, not in Saravali — the texts the rest of this site's dosha material is drawn from. It appears in Jyotish writing in the twentieth century, and its spread tracks the growth of the remedy trade around it.
That is not an argument that the pattern means nothing, and we are not making one. It is the explanation for something a reader notices immediately: that no two sources define this the same way, disagree about the partial case, and disagree about whether direction matters. There is no old authority for them to be reading differently. Say that, and the rest of the subject becomes easier to hold at the right distance.
What we will not tell you
This is the single most monetised finding in Indian astrology, and the money is in the fear. So, plainly:
- A Kaal Sarp finding is not a prediction, and it is not the reason for a difficulty you are living through.
- We will not tell you a puja is required, or that not performing one leaves anything unresolved.
- We will not sell you a ritual, a stone, a pilgrimage or a consultation to remove it.
What we do is report whether the pattern is in your chart, which type, and where the traditions disagree about reading it. That is the honest extent of what a chart can tell anybody about this.

Generate my chartCommon questions
What is Kaal Sarp Dosha?
A pattern, not a planet. Rahu and Ketu sit exactly opposite each other, dividing the zodiac in two. When all seven of the other grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — fall on one side of that axis, with none on the other, the chart is said to carry Kaal Sarp. The name means the serpent of time, and the image is of the whole chart held between its head and tail.
Is Kaal Sarp Dosha in the classical texts?
No. What the classical texts do carry, at length, is Rahu and Ketu read individually — by house, by sign, by what they aspect. What is absent is this particular pattern: the whole chart caught between them, treated as a named condition in its own right. So the material a reader is pointed at when they ask about Kaal Sarp is not a reading of an old rule; it is a newer idea assembled from older parts.
What is partial Kaal Sarp Dosha?
Where one planet sits outside the axis and every other one is inside. The detail worth knowing is how unstable that boundary is: the Moon covers about 13° a day, so a chart can be full Kaal Sarp in the morning and partial by evening. Two siblings born on the same day can fall on opposite sides of the definition, which is a reasonable thing to hold in mind before treating either result as a fact about a person.
How many people have it?
Far more than the reputation suggests. Rahu and Ketu take about eighteen months to cross a sign, so the axis moves slowly and the pattern recurs in long stretches — whole cohorts born within a period share it. Anything a substantial fraction of people carry is not a good explanation for what is distinctive about one life.
Does a puja at Trimbakeshwar remove it?
We are not going to tell you it does or that you need one. Trimbakeshwar is a genuine and ancient place of Shiva worship and people find real meaning in going. What we will not do is present that journey as a repair for something in your chart, or imply that not going leaves a problem in place.
Does Kaal Sarp cancel or weaken with time?
The common position is that its force is read as strongest in early life and lessening after the Rahu and Ketu dashas have passed. As with everything else about this subject, sources differ, and the running dasha matters more to a reading than the pattern does.
