The twelve rashis, and what each one is called in English. A rashi is a 30-degree division of the zodiac — and in Vedic astrology your rashi is your moon sign, the sign the Moon occupied when you were born.
That last part is the bit worth knowing. A Western zodiac sign is where the Sun was; a rashi is where the Moon was, and a rashifal is cast against the Moon. The two agree only by coincidence, so for most people they are different signs. Knowing your birth date gives you the sun sign; the rashi needs the time and place as well.

Which rashi am I?
Most people answer this with their birth month, which gives the sun sign rather than the rashi. To know the rashi you need the Moon's position at your birth — which means the date, the time and the place. It takes about a minute and is often a surprise.
If you do not know the birth time, or not even the date, the name given at naamkaran carries the syllable of the birth nakshatra and so points at a rashi. Find your rashi by name — with the caveat that it only works for that name, not an everyday one.
