Sade Sati
साढ़े साती
The seven and a half years Saturn spends crossing the sign before your moon sign, your moon sign, and the sign after it. Because it depends on where Saturn is right now, you can tell whether you are in it without a birth chart — you only need your rashi.
Who is in Sade Sati right now
Saturn is in Meen (मीन, Pisces) at 17.4°, retrograde. Recomputed 2026-09-30.
| Rashi | Phase | Saturn's position |
|---|---|---|
| Kumbh · कुंभ | Setting | 2 nd from the Moon |
| Meen · मीन | Peak | 1 st from the Moon |
| Mesh · मेष | Rising | 12 th from the Moon |
Kumbh is in its setting phase, Meen is in its peak phase, Mesh is in its rising phase. Every other rashi is outside Sade Sati today.
The three phases
Two and a half years each. They are read differently, and the middle one is not simply the worst — it is the one where the pressure has an identifiable source.
- Rising · आरोहण · First ~2.5 years
-
Saturn in the 12th from your moon sign
Read as the phase where costs start appearing without an obvious cause — expense, disrupted sleep, a sense of working harder for the same result. The twelfth house is the house of loss and of what is spent, so the tradition reads this as the outgoing beginning rather than the crisis.
- Peak · शिखर · Middle ~2.5 years
-
Saturn over your moon sign
Saturn on the Moon itself, which is the placement the whole reputation rests on. The Moon governs the mind in Vedic astrology, and Saturn is read as slow, heavy and unwilling to be hurried — so this is the stretch read as mental weight rather than external disaster.
- Setting · अवरोहण · Last ~2.5 years
-
Saturn in the 2nd from your moon sign
The second house covers what you hold — savings, family, speech. Read as the account being settled: the pressure moving from the mind to practical matters, and easing as Saturn approaches the exit.
Why it is counted from the Moon
Every other major transit in Jyotish is read from the Lagna. Sade Sati is read from the Moon, and that is deliberate: the Moon governs the mind, and this transit is classically about what the mind carries rather than what happens to the circumstances.
It also has a practical consequence worth knowing. Because it needs only your moon sign and not your birth time, Sade Sati is one of the few readings that survives an uncertain birth time almost intact — the Moon takes over two days to change sign, so an hour of error changes nothing.
The mistake to avoid is using a sun sign. If you know your sign from a Western horoscope, that is the Sun's, not the Moon's, and for most people the two are different. Find your rashi.
What we will not tell you
Sade Sati is the transit most often used to frighten people, and the fear is what remedies are sold against. So, plainly:
- Being in Sade Sati is not a forecast of a bad seven and a half years, and nobody honest will present it as one.
- We will not tell you a puja, a stone or a donation is required, or that skipping one makes anything worse.
- We will not sell you a remedy for it, and we will not tell you it explains a difficulty you are already living through.
What a transit reading can honestly do is tell you where Saturn is relative to your Moon, and what that placement has traditionally been taken to mean. It cannot see your life, and the dasha running underneath it matters more than the transit does.
Common questions
How long does Sade Sati last?
Seven and a half years, which is where the name comes from — sade sati is "seven and a half". Saturn takes roughly two and a half years to cross a sign and passes through three: the one before your moon sign, your moon sign, and the one after. Retrograde motion moves the exact dates around by months, so the boundaries are softer than a calendar suggests.
How often does Sade Sati come around?
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go round the zodiac, so most people meet it two or three times in a life — typically once in youth, once in middle age, and once late. The three are not read as equivalent: the same transit against a nineteen-year-old and a fifty-year-old is a different set of demands.
Is Sade Sati calculated from the moon sign or the sun sign?
The moon sign, always. It is worth being concrete about the cost of getting this wrong: your sun sign and your moon sign coincide roughly one time in twelve, so substituting one for the other is not an approximation — it is a different sign in about eleven cases out of twelve, and the answer it gives you is unrelated to yours.
What is Dhaiya, and is it the same thing?
No — a separate transit, and shorter. Counting them together is instructive, though: Saturn is in one of these five positions relative to your Moon for five of the twelve signs it passes through, which works out at roughly twelve of every twenty-nine and a half years. Roughly two years in every five fall under one Saturn transit or another, which is a useful corrective to treating any of them as a rare affliction.
Does everyone have a bad seven and a half years?
No, and classical astrology is specific about why not. For a Taurus ascendant Saturn rules the 9th and 10th houses, and for a Libra ascendant the 4th and 5th — in both cases making it a yogakaraka, the single most benefic graha in that chart. A transit by the best planet in your chart is not read the way the same transit is read for someone Saturn rules badly for. Its own strength and the running dasha both matter more than the transit does.
Can Sade Sati be good?
It is classically associated with the results of sustained work arriving, which is not the same as ease. Saturn is the graha of consequence in Vedic astrology — it is read as delivering what was earned rather than what was hoped for. Whether that is welcome depends on what preceded it.
