A chart is Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. That is the whole definition — everything else written about it is interpretation.

It is worth knowing early that the classical position is much more qualified than the reputation. There are eight recognised cancellations, the traditions disagree about which houses count, and most reckonings give Mars less weight as both people get older.

The six placements

Not all six are given equal weight. The 7th and 8th are taken most seriously; the 2nd and 4th are read as being about the household rather than the couple.

1st house: Temperament — a sharper, more combative streak, and impatience with being managed.
2th house: Speech and the wider family. The traditional concern is friction at home rather than between the couple.
4th house: Domestic peace and the mother. Read as restlessness in the home rather than about the marriage itself.
7th house: The house of partnership, and the placement taken most seriously of the six.
8th house: Longevity and upheaval. The other placement given real weight.
12th house: Expenditure and the private life of the marriage — the bedroom, and losses.

Some traditions count the 2nd house and some do not; some check from the Moon and from Venus as well as from the Lagna, which can make one chart Manglik by one method and not by another. If two astrologers disagree about whether you are Manglik, this is usually why.

The eight cancellations

These are the part most summaries list without explaining, and the reason each one is held to work is worth knowing — it lets you tell whether an astrologer has actually considered them.

Both charts are Manglik: The most cited, and the source of the "find another Manglik" advice. The reasoning is symmetry: the affliction is understood as an imbalance between two charts, so two carrying it are held to be balanced.
Mars is in its own sign or exalted: Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn is acting in its own nature rather than under strain, and the tradition reads a comfortable planet as far less disruptive than an uncomfortable one.
Jupiter aspects Mars, or sits with it: Jupiter is the great benefic, and its aspect is generally held to temper whatever it falls on. This is one of the strongest cancellations in classical practice.
Mars sits in a sign ruled by Mars or Saturn: Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn or Aquarius. Saturn is Mars’s natural counterweight, and either lordship is read as containing it.
Mars is in the 7th and in Cancer or Capricorn: Mars is debilitated in Cancer and exalted in Capricorn, and both are traditionally excepted in the seventh — the debilitated Mars because it is weak, the exalted because it is well placed.
Saturn aspects the Manglik house: The same containment logic. Saturn slows and restrains; where it falls on the afflicted house, the affliction is read as held in check.
The Moon is strong in an angle: A well-placed Moon in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th is held to steady the chart generally, and several texts extend that to Mangal dosha.
Both people are past their late twenties: Not a classical cancellation but a widely applied one: Mars is held to lose force with age, so the caution is applied far less to a later marriage. Worth knowing because it is often the reason an astrologer waves the finding away.

In practice at least one of these applies to most Manglik charts. A finding reported without a cancellation check is half a reading, and it is the half that causes the alarm.

How it is used in matching

Manglik is checked separately from the 36-guna score and does not enter it. Two charts can score 30 out of 36 with one carrying Mangal dosha, or 20 with neither — the two assessments are independent and answer different questions.

What we will not tell you

More is written about this subject to frighten people than about any other part of a chart, and some of it is written by people selling the cure. So, plainly:

A Manglik finding is not a prediction about your marriage, and nobody honest will present it as one.

What is Manglik dosha?

Do the remedies work?

We are not going to tell you they do. The traditional remedies — Mangal mantra, a coral after consultation, Tuesday fasting, Hanuman worship — are part of the practice and people find meaning in them. What we will not do is sell them as a fix for a problem, or suggest that skipping them puts a marriage at risk. That is where this subject is most often used against people.

What is Anshik Manglik?

Partial Manglik — the term used when Mars is in one of the six houses but weakly placed, or when one or more cancellations apply. It is a description rather than a separate category, and different astrologers draw the line differently.
