The idea that an unsettled obligation to the ancestors shows in a chart, read in the 9th house — the house of the father, of dharma, and of the fortune you inherit rather than earn.

This site computes every other dosha it discusses. It does not compute this one, and that is deliberate. The reason is the most useful thing we can tell you about the subject.

Four rules, and they disagree

These are not four wordings of one rule. They select genuinely different charts — a chart that carries Pitra Dosha under the second may be clear under the first and the third.

The Sun afflicted in the 9th house: The Sun conjunct or aspected by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, in the house of the father and of dharma. The most widely quoted version, and the one with the clearest internal logic — the Sun is the karaka of the father in Jyotish.
Rahu or Ketu in the 9th house: Read on its own, without reference to the Sun. Selects a much larger set of charts, since the nodes spend about eighteen months in each sign and everybody born in that window shares the placement.
The 9th lord in a dusthana: The ruler of the 9th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th. A structural reading rather than a placement one, and it overlaps only partly with the first two.
The Moon afflicted, for the maternal line: A less common version, held by readers who separate paternal ancestors from maternal ones. It selects a different set again.

Why there is no calculator on this page

Building one would take an afternoon. It would also mean choosing one of those four rules, running your chart against it, and printing an answer — while a reader using a different rule would tell you the opposite about the same chart.

A calculator hides that. It prints "Pitra Dosha: present" in the same confident type as a tithi or a moon sign, which are facts, and the reader has no way to see that one of those three things is a choice we made on their behalf.

So instead: your Kundli shows the 9th house, its lord, the Sun's placement and the nodes. Generate it, hold it against the four rules above, and you will know more than a verdict would have told you — including how much the verdict depended on which rule was used.

What the 9th house actually carries

This part is classical and not in dispute. The 9th is the house of dharma, of the father, of the guru, of long journeys and of bhagya — the portion of fortune that arrives rather than being built. It is one of the two trikona houses classical astrology treats as most auspicious.

The reasoning behind Pitra Dosha follows from that: if the 9th is where inheritance shows — not property, but position, belief and luck received from those before you — then affliction there is read as something in that inheritance being unsettled.

You can find that reasoning coherent and still notice that turning it into a diagnostic rule is where the sources part company.

What the lists of signs are worth

Search this subject and you will find the same catalogue everywhere: marriage delayed, difficulty having children, family quarrels that never resolve, money that arrives and does not stay, recurring illness in the household.

Read that list as what it is. It describes things that happen in most families at some point, for reasons that have nothing to do with a chart, and there is no version of a life it cannot be made to fit. A description that matches almost everybody is not evidence about anybody.

It is also the mechanism the subject is monetised through. The list is what makes a reader recognise themselves, and recognition is what the remedy is sold against.

Shraddha and Tarpan, described accurately

The practice everything points at is the Shraddha performed during Pitru Paksha — the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada, ending on Sarvapitri Amavasya, which falls in September or early October. Tarpan, the water offering, is part of it.

It matters to be exact about what this is. Shraddha is a rite of remembrance owed to the dead in Hindu practice generally — performed by families who have never looked at a chart, on a schedule set by the calendar rather than by anybody's horoscope. It is old, it is well-defined, and it has nothing to do with astrology.

Presenting it as a repair for a dosha inverts it: a duty to the dead becomes a transaction for the living. If you want to observe Pitru Paksha, observe it because it is owed. The tithi calendar is where the dates come from.

What we will not tell you

We will not tell you your chart carries Pitra Dosha, because the rules for deciding that disagree and we are not going to pick one for you.

What are the signs of Pitra Dosha?

The lists in circulation name things like delayed marriage, difficulty having children, recurring family disputes, and money that never quite stays. Read those honestly: they describe experiences a large share of families have at some point, for reasons that have nothing to do with a chart. A description that fits almost everyone is not evidence of anything, and the lists are most often used to make somebody worried enough to buy a remedy.

What are the remedies for Pitra Dosha?

The practice pointed at is Shraddha, and the thing to notice is that it is not occasional. A family observes it on each parent's death anniversary as well as through Pitru Paksha, on a schedule set by the calendar and by the household — never by a horoscope. No classical text prescribes it as a remedy for a chart, because the rite predates the diagnosis it is now sold against. If you want to observe it, you need a date and a family priest, not an astrologer.

When is Pitru Paksha?

It is the same fortnight everywhere, but it is named differently depending on which lunar convention your family follows — Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha under Amanta, which most of southern and western India uses, and Ashwin Krishna Paksha under Purnimanta, used across the north. Same fifteen tithis, same ending on Sarvapitri Amavasya, two names. It is a common source of confusion when relatives compare calendars.

Is Pitra Dosha in the classical texts?
