Your birth star and its quarter
The 27 Nakshatras divide the sidereal zodiac into segments of 13 degrees 20 minutes. Each has four Padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. This calculator identifies the segment containing the Moon at your birth instant and links to its reference guide.
Nakshatra and Rashi are different divisions
Rashi divides the same zodiac into twelve 30-degree signs. A Nakshatra can span two signs, while each Pada falls within one sign. Knowing only your Rashi cannot identify your birth star or Pada.
Why the birth time is important
The Moon can cross a Pada or Nakshatra boundary during your birth date. If the time is approximate, calculate both ends of the possible time range. Matching results are more informative than silently choosing a time you do not know.
How the result connects to Dasha
The birth Nakshatra supplies the starting lord for Vimshottari Dasha. The fraction of the Nakshatra already travelled determines the balance of that first period. Use the Dasha calculator for dated periods rather than treating a birth-star description as a timing prediction.
